Anyone Want a Pen Pal?

So, I have a favor to pass along.

I'm still sending / receiving long letters from my friend Larry, who I met in church and is now in jail. Actually, if I can get the initiative to write another livejournal post and send it to him first, he'll be leaving some comments by proxy! But in his last letter, he said that he gets so much mail, the other guys are asking him how he found people to write to him. So, he asked me if I'd do a little digging around (to find volunteer sites through churches, etc. for people who volunteered to write to prisoners). I'm going to do that, but I was also wondering if any of you were interested? It sounds...well, I know it sounded strange to me at first (write to someone in jail?) but it's really just like any other kind of pen pal, and I've found it's enriched my life.

Anyway, comment if you're interested, and I'll give you my email and we can set something up. You're free to write to Larry too if you want, of course, but this invitation is primarily to have your address passed along to one of the others in his dorm, who might not have any correspondents yet.

You know, this really tempts me, but there is the stigma of "OMG THEY'RE IN JAIL" as petty as it sounds xD; Do you know what others around him are in jail for? As in, not exact crimes, but around the same thing he was accused of?

I wouldn't mind starting out with the address I have at the college right now, since it is not my home address. I enjoy pen pals x3
You know, I can see that reaction. Since I knew Larry before this whole thing happened, it was more "here's someone I know / okay, here's the situation he's in" rather than "here's someone I don't know who's in jail!" Yeah, as far as I know, it's mostly the same crime. What he says is that the place he's in now is like a "getting ready to leave" spot. There aren't too many people who have more than a couple of years left, and yeah, most go to sex offender classes. I think part of the request I had mailed to me was just Larry trying to pass along the joy he finds in his mail, since everyone gets pretty lonely.

Would it make you more comfortable if I just got you in touch with Larry directly, and then he could see if there's anyone else he thinks you might enjoy writing with? If so, I have your email--just comment a "yes" or "no," and I have your email already. So, if you want, I'll send you Larry's address and let him know you might be writing, and you can take it from there.
